Review Of America's Next Top Model

Supermodel Extraordinaire Tyra Banks created the concept for television's first professional model competition, America's Next Top Model (ANTM) in 2002. The show first aired in May of 2003 and has continued to be UPN's top rated show. The stakes are high for each season's all female contestant group as they vie for a $100,000 modeling contract with the cosmetics giant Cover Girl, professional representation by the elite Ford Modeling Agency, and a career-changing spread in a leading fashion magazine such as Elle magazine or Vogue. America's Next Top Model just saw its 7th season (called cycles) and has featured a wide range of impressive judges including the famous 1960’s model Twiggy, the world's first supermodel Janice Dickinson (who now has her own model competition show called Janice Dickinson’s Modeling Agency), Nigel Barker (ex-model turned fashion photographer), runway coach J. Alexander and Tyra's friend and stylist Jay Manuel.

The number of contestants ranges from ten to fourteen females who are all between the ages of 18 and 26. Each contestant comes to the show featuring their own particular look and style, but Tyra quickly develops a radical new makeover for each contestant. The contestants are quickly made over and given brand new haircuts, hair color, and new makeup looks, oftentimes against their will. Each contestant is then moved into one house or apartment that has been designed and developed to look like a trendy model’s residence. The girls are put together with roommates, and oftentimes explosive and dramatic fights develop.

Each episode of America's Next Top Model sets up the model hopefuls on a challenging photoshoot, many of which occur outside in extreme elements or feature terrifying stunts with animals or insects. It is the job of the contestants to look both beautiful and confident, and also to maintain a professional attitude no matter the stress of the situation. Other than the photoshoots, the contestants are also sent to “try out” for jobs and contracts in front of other powerful industry professionals including designers and agents. The competition for these jobs is severe, and part of the challenge is to see how strong the contestants remain under the bright lights of the fashion world. Audiences wait for the international component of each cycle when Tyra announces the girls have to pack immediately for an impromptu overseas trip to experience the modeling world in another fashion-forward city. Cities that the models have visited include Paris, London, Tokyo and Barcelona. The international competition is the most difficult as the models struggle to get jobs and complete photoshoots in a strange country having little to no facility with the native language.

Generally one contestant is eliminated at the end of each episode, and the elimination is decided by the judging panel that is headed by Tyra Banks. Each judge views the best photos from each contestant’s shoot and evaluates the head and body shots for poise, commercial and high-fashion appeal, as well as pure aesthetic value. During each elimination, Tyra Banks delivers the news with compassion and sometimes stern reminders about how difficult it is to stay in the modeling business. The last contestant remaining becomes America’s Next Top Model and goes on to have numerous endorsements and take part in fashion industry events all over the world.

A Review Of Cat Fancy Magazine
Occasionally, some of us get to do work that is totally fun and such is the case with my assignment to review Cat Fancy Magazine. My own two Bengal cats volunteered to assist with my research but in the end both of them were found sleeping on the job.

A recent issue of Cat Fancy Magazine estimated that, based on the latest surveys, there are approximately 90 million cats in the United States. Thus, it is indeed fortunate for those of us who own these ‘purrfect’ animals to have Cat Fancy Magazine available as our own resource. Every issue of Cat Fancy Magazine contains delightful sections such as: Purrs and Hisses (letters from readers), the Cat Calendar (who, what, when, where), In the Mews, What’s New Pussycat, and other zany sections that make reading each issue a pure pleasure. One of my favorite browse sections of Cat Fancy Magazine is the Breeder Directory. It contains about twenty pages of information organized by breed to help anyone quickly find additional resources of interest. The Cat Clinic – Ask the Vet section of Cat Fancy Magazine contains very important and helpful tips regarding the health of your pet.

Of course the absolute best part of Cat Fancy Magazine is the surprise that comes from their monthly feature stories. Everything about cats from their ancient Egyptian history to their downtown New York penthouse dwellings is covered. Naturally, Cat Fancy Magazine features photographs of the most stunning cats in the world but it also includes the everyday house cat on an equal pawing. Practical stories such as how to save on veterinary bills and an enjoyable monthly editor’s note from Susan Logan help round out the value of the magazine.

What Would Eminem Put In His House?
I've often wondered what Eminem might have in his house. I wonder what decor a rapper from Detroit would want. I read his bio in several places, watched his movie 8 Mile and I've thought about this a lot. I actually grew up a block from 7 Mile. I think my life was quite a bit different than what I read about him, but still, I visualize 8 Mile, I know I traveled daily down 8 Mile's east and west side on my way to school (which was across town for me).

I have some collectible items that I imagine would suit him. I might be way off the mark. I'd like to think someone like him would not indulge in mega bucks for sofas, paintings and extreme high ticket items because he's seen success, but rather would want to live amongst a more down-to-earth collection or decor. I've read descriptions of his early years as being part of the "white lower-class experience". Somehow, this doesn't line up with a home decked out from fancy Design Center furnishings, but oh well. This is my fantasy:

I think Eminem should have his walls covered with tin signs - memorabilia - like one for Ford Trucks (made in Detroit), or a tin sign of a Remington Shotgun and Duck. I have no clue if he drove a Ford or went hunting, but I do know these are big things in Michigan. And if he is a hunter, maybe he likes Deer things - a Deer Key Rack, or a shelf with a moose head.

I picture him in a kitchen with some corny things - I know he has the best appliances and cabinetry available, and maybe his counters are costly granite imported from who knows where. But I just hope he has a Kitchen Fairy on a Pie to bring it all down to reality. And a Half Eaten Apple Salt and Pepper Set. Those fans he raps to, they are more likely have that in their kitchen than an original Andy Warhol painting.

Well, maybe not. We don't mind our celebrities living it up to the hilt. We just want to relate to them and in Eminem's particular case, he's carved himself a space in the limelight that draws attention from ALL walks of life, not just those in his newly acquired (hopefully) wealthy class. I just hope he keeps some reminders of those early years by surrounding himself with some of the simple delights around.

Gas Prices Go
Recently, the price of gas has gone up approximately three or four times a day, depending on how energetic the person is who climbs up and changes the prices at your favorite filling station, until the only word for the skyrocketing astonishment is "gas-tronomical!”

President Bush took a bold stance on the issue, saying, ““Americans understand the price of crude oil is going up but they will not accept manipulation of the market. And neither will I!”

Proud words, perhaps evoked partly due to anxiety about how his credentials as an ex-oilman might weigh untowardly on his credibility and on his already in-the-well approval ratings.

In the same speech, perhaps not quite recognizing the astonishing similarity to manipulation, but in a consumer-friendly sense, he announced that he is increasing the supply of the suddenly pricey liquid by temporarily halting deposits to the U. S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Nevertheless, as a result of the dramatic revaluation of the ironically golden liquid, some surprising new players have entered the gasoline business. Tiffany has announced it plans to install a fuel pump next to the counter in which it displays its most extravagant diamonds. Cartier intends to retail the gaseous bauble in solid-gold thimbles. And DeBeers, the legendary diamond merchant, will promote its pricy petrol with a variation on its usual slogan, "A diamond is forever," with “A tankful is not forever."

On the other hand, Average Americans, in an effort to accommodate the daily dozen or so price rises, have adopted new ways to get to work. One, called deep carpooling, requires commuters to stuff themselves into cars until their arms and legs are sticking out the windows. Another is to hitch a half-dozen or so cars together, so they can all move along with only one engine burning the precious fuel.

Others have once again opted for the uncertainties of mass transportation and, as expected, are often arriving at work late en mass.

But Americans are a can do people, no matter how much a can of Middle Eastern oil attempts to grease the skids in their wallets.
