Allendale in Northumberland County England History and GeographyALLENDALE, a parochial chapelry in the southern division of TINDALE ward, county of NORTHUMBERLAND, comprising the market town of Allendale, and the townships of West Allendale, Broadside with Forest, Cotton, and Keenty, and containing 4629 inhabitants. The town of ALLENDALE, situated 9¾ miles (S.W. by W.) from Hexham, and 286 (N.N.W.) from London, is watered by the river Allen, from which it derives its name; it is irregularly built on an acclivity, gradually rising from the eastern bank of the river, and is supplied with water from springs which abound in the neighbourhood: a subscription library was established in 1825. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the lead mines, which are very extensive, producing upwards of 2500 tons annually: there are several walks for grinding and washing the ore, and some smelting houses, in one of which, twenty-one tons pass through the furnace weekly, from which a considerable quantity of silver is separated. The market day is Friday; and the fairs are held on the last Friday in April, the 22d of August, and the first Friday after the 29th of October, for horses, cattle, and sheep. The living is a perpetual curacy endowed with £200 private benefaction, £200 royal bounty, and £200 parliamentary grant, and in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Archbishop of York. The chapel, dedicated to St. Peter, was rebuilt in 1825. There are two chapels of ease; one at Ninebanks, rebuilt in 1816, and the other at High Allen, erected in 1822 by the lady of the manor. There are places of worship for the Society of Friends and Wesleyan Methodists. A free grammar school was founded and endowed, in 1693, by Mr. Christopher Wilkinson and others; the master's salary is £55. 10. per annum.
